Vans US Open of Surfing continues in Huntington Beach with 8-foot waves

The Vans US Open of Surfing continued at the Huntington Beach pier Monday as parts of the Southland got monsoonal moisture, leading to huge waves, flood warnings and dangerous rip currents.

Competitions for skateboarding, BMX, and surfing are held during the Huntington Beach event. Eight-foot waves on Monday made for exciting competition among surfers.

Competitors in the sport of surfing like Philippa Anderson said, "With one wave, I realised my sheer skill had to come into play." She was successful in moving on to the next round.

The National Weather Service, meanwhile, has issued a flood warning for Riverside County through Monday night.

At the Malibu coast and other Los Angeles County beaches, where dangerous rip currents and breaking waves were anticipated due to heightened surf of 3 to 6 feet, a beach hazards statement was also issued through Wednesday afternoon.

Due to unsafe swimming conditions, swimmers and surfers were advised to stay out of the water or to stay close to manned lifeguard towers. According to NWS, rock jetties can also be fatal in such circumstances.

Monsoonal showers, thunderstorms, and even moderate to heavy rain were expected Monday in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys as well as the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The public is welcome until August 7.
